The film is set in the 14th century during the Black Death and follows the story of a knight, Geoffrey de Charny (played by Jay Hernandez), who is wrongly accused of witchcraft and burning at the stake. He is saved by a Dominican friar, William de Montfort (played by Nicolas Cage), who is on a mission to root out heresy. The two form an unlikely alliance as they travel through Europe, with de Charny's wife, Joan (played by Angelina Jolie), joining them on their journey.
