To understand the “Disco” half of the equation, we have to rewind to 1977. Disco was music for bodies—basslines that vibrated through floorboards, strings that soared like cocaine-fueled angels, and vocals lost in a sea of mirrorballs.

: For a more authentic "Future Funk" sound, producers often "chop" (slice) the samples and re-arrange them to create new rhythms. Listen to any classic Future Funk track—say, "Sailor Team" by Macross 82-99. The vocal sample is from an anime idol song. It repeats, stutters, then drops out completely, leaving only the kick drum and a single, shimmering chord. Then the vocal returns, but it’s warped, like a cassette tape left on a car dashboard.

: Producers take 1970s Funk or 1980s Japanese City Pop and rearrange them into new, catchy loops.
