In 1983, the Getty Museum purchased a 6-foot-tall marble statue of a youth (kouros) for $10 million. Months of scientific analysis proved it genuine. Yet, multiple art experts walked into the room and felt immediate, visceral revulsion. They couldn't say why—they just knew it was a fake. They had "thin-sliced" the truth. The statue was indeed a forgery.
