Maria’s aunt, embodying the conservative values of the town, eventually discovers the relationship and forbids Maria from seeing Jon. This tension highlights the film’s critique of social prejudice: the village’s "care" for Maria is rooted in fear and judgment of Jon’s lifestyle rather than an understanding of Maria’s emotional needs.
