At this point the film’s editing became bold and metaphysical. It proposed a thesis that was more mantra than argument: forgetting is not an erasure but a relocation. The chest had been for delegating forgetting to the sea, but the sea had begun delegating back. The film made this claim visually, showing beachcombers finding envelopes of photographs, a woman in a market opening a jar and finding a pressed photograph inside labeled with her maiden name, a child unearthing a music box engraved with the image of a woman whose portrait matched the film’s opening balcony scene.
