The disaster began innocuously: a 6-inch diameter borewell, drilled from the surface to map methane pockets, accidentally punctured an abandoned, water-filled working. Gravity took over. Millions of gallons of water, sediment, and debris cascaded into the active No. 3 incline seam, where 65 workers were extracting coal by the traditional "board and pillar" method.
On the morning of , nearly 232 miners descended into the Mahabir Colliery in Raniganj, West Bengal, for their regular shift. The colliery was known for its deep underground tunnels and challenging geography.
